By Don Molino, The Voice of Louisiana Agriculture Radio Network

Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. Mike Strain is back in Louisiana today after several days of meetings in Cooperstown, New York, with members of the Northeast Agriculture Commissioners Association.

During his report on the Voice of Louisiana Agriculture Radio Network, Strain said he and the other ag commissioners talked about animal diseases and the importance of proper tracing of livestock and animals and participating in the National Animal ID program.  They also talked about the proper use of health certificates in order to stop diseases before they can spread.

Strain said the members also had a lot of discussion about Avian Influenza as well as issues facing small diaries “as we try to move forward, not only to increase (milk) consumption but to help return our dairies to a more profitable situation.”

The commissioner will hit the road again Sunday to travel to Ohio for a meeting of the Central United States Agriculture Commissioners.  Strain serves this year as president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.
