DEKALB® farmer Nolan Clark of Mer Rouge, Louisiana, captured a first place state yield award in the 2016 National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) National Corn Yield Contest. Clark achieved his winning yield of 275.3 bushels per acre in the Irrigated category with DEKALB DKC62-08 Brand corn. That yield result was also the highest among all Louisiana state winners.
Clark is a partner in Clark Farms along with his brother Erle. He attributes his yield win to high-performing DEKALB genetics and the management practices on his farm. He plants DEKALB products across his 6,000-acre operation.
“DEKALB corn has been the backbone of our corn production for over a decade, and DKC62-08 in particular has an awesome set of genetics that have become a game-changer for us,” he said. “The brand has shown great consistency, even in a challenging weather year like 2016 which included flooding that bookended the start and end of our growing season.”
Clark also cites planting narrow twin rows at high plant populations – 44,000 plants per acre on his 10-acre yield contest plot and an average of 41,000 plants per acre across his entire farm. “DEKALB corn tolerated high populations and yielded very well without stressing the plants on my acres,” he noted.
In all, 7,972 entries were received from throughout the U.S. in the 2016 NCGA yield contest. Clark along with other DEKALB winners will be honored at the 2017 Commodity Classic to be held March 2-4 in San Antonio, Texas, with an awards banquet and private country music concert.
“It is exciting to see these farmers push the yield boundaries, and we congratulate them for their hard work and success,” said Jesse Hamonic, DEKALB Brand Lead, who will present the winners with a trophy at the banquet. “Through its advanced breeding program, the DEKALB brand is committed to helping farmers maximize their success by offering exclusive, high-yield genetics that deliver consistent performance.”
