Wetlands Conservation Grants Available

Story by USDA NRCS

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in Louisiana is making available up to $17 million in financial and technical assistance through the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program — Wetlands Reserve Easements.

Applications are due Feb. 29 to be considered for 2016 funding. Applications received after the deadline will be evaluated for the funding year beginning Oct. 1.

The program is designed to restore and protect wetlands across the nation. Eligible lands include farmed or converted wetlands that can be successfully and cost-effectively restored. The program helps private landowners enhance and protect habitat for fish and wildlife, including threatened and endangered species, improve water quality and reduce flooding, recharge groundwater, protect biological diversity and provide opportunities for educational, scientific and recreational activities.

Applicants can visit a local USDA Service Center or www.nrcs.usda.gov/getstarted.
