The swollen Mississippi River prompted the Army Corps of Engineers to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway earlier this month to divert flood water away from the city of New Orleans. That has 200,000 cubic feet of freshwater flowing into Lake Pontchartrain every second. As TWILA’s Karl Wiggers shows us, past openings of the spillway endangered Louisiana oyster beds, but this time, it could breathe fresh life into the industry.
